Eight producers of music videos broadcasted on Persian-language satellite networks outside Iran have been arrested, reported Iranian judiciary news agency Mizan Online on 28 May 2016.

According to Tehran prosecutor general Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi the videos were “obscene” and “broadcast on a famous anti-revolutionary television channel” and added that a special court for media and culture will review the case and consider pressing charges, reported Pakistan Today on 29 May 2016.

The producers, as well the videos and their content, remain unknown.

Iranian police spokesman Saeed Montazeralmahadi told the Young Journalists Club on 28 May 2016 that police took action after Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the entity responsible for looking into violations on such videos, filed a report.

Strict parameters for artists
Iran’s strict cultural policies on music and musicians include not allowing male and female musicians and singers perform together or be recorded together, women performing without a headscarf, and performing or appearing on tv or satellite networks outside of the country.

The distribution of such music is also considered illegal. In the country’s most recent example of its harsh policies, musician Mehdi Rajabian and his filmmaker brother Hossein Rajabian began serving out their three-year sentences on 5 June 2016 for the production and promotion of music deemed to be “insulting” and “propaganda against the state”.

Freemuse has called on Iranian authorities to free the artists and drop all charges against them.
