China: Tibetan monk and artist reportedly arrested


41-year-old Tibetan monk and artist of traditional thanka painting, Ngawang Gyaltsen, is reported to have been arrested by Chinese police in Nagchu County of Central Tibet on 24 February 2015.

The exact reason of his arrest remains unclear, reported

Ngawang Tharpa, an exile Tibetan with contacts in the region, said his sources indicated the arrest was linked to Ngawang’s political standpoint. Ngawang was a well-known artist and was a monk of Shak Rongpo monastery until, according to both The Tibet Post International and, this monastery was shut down by Chinese authorities in July 2013. The monastery’s senior figure Lama Dawa was arrested and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for alleged links with the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.
