Cuba: Artist El Sexto released after two months in prison

Cuban artist Danilo “El Sexto” Maldonado was released from maximum-security prison on 21 January 2017 after spending two months behind bars and being moved multiple times among several detention centres, reported Artforum on 21 January 2017.

El Sexto was released after the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNGWAD) began reviewing a legal petition filed on his behalf. In a Facebook statement, the artists said no explanation was given for his release, but believes that the release stems from UNGWAD’s communication to the Cuban government that his case was under their review.

The artist was arrested on 26 December 2016 for anti-Castro graffiti sprayed at the time of the announcement of Fidel Castro’s death.

Read El Sexto’s 16 February 2017 testimony before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights and Global Women’s Issues in which he recounts his multiple arrests, including his most recent one, and the reality for those living in the country today
