Iran: Singer banned from tv and festival

salar aghiliSalar Aghili has been banned from appearing on Iranian television and performing in the country’s Fajr International Music Festival, reported human rights organisation journalismisnotacrime.com on 26 January 2016.

The famous singer was banned due to his appearance on Manoto TV, a Persian-language satellite channel based in London.

Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ali Jannati could not confirm the ban, but said that “artists shouldn’t give any interviews to foreign satellite channels”, adding that if an artist did they would “lose the ministry’s support”.

Aghili told VOA News that he is “not a political person” and is “not familiar” with the politics around satellite channels. He went on to say that his goal for appearing on the channel was to promote his art.

The singer is currently on a European tour and later plans to tour the US. It is unclear what will happen to the singer upon his return to Iran.

“We should wait until he arrives back in Iran. We can then discuss the issue with him,” Jannati said. “We can’t judge him now or decide about him when he is not here.”
