Israel: Police detain Palestinian writer allegedly over novel
Israeli police detained Palestinian writer Khalida Ghosheh after raiding her home in the neighbourdhood of Beit Hanina in eastern Jerusalem and took her into custody for interrogation on 11 March 2017, reported the Ma’an News Agency.
Ghosheh told her lawyer that the reason for her detention was related to her latest novel ‘Masyadat Ibn Awa’ (The Jackal’s Trap), which is scheduled for release in October. The novel is about Palestinians who collaborate with Israeli forces.
In a 16-minute video on her Facebook page, the writer recounts an experience she had with the Israeli Security Agency, known as Shin Bet, in which she says she learned how the agency recruits young Palestinians in their efforts, reported Arab48 on 11 March 2017.
In the video Ghosheh says she selected the title of her novel because she sees a comparison between how security forces “entrap” young Palestinians to how jackals hunt and kill their prey.
Other Palestinian writers arrested and detained
Ghosheh is not the first Palestinian writer to be arrested and detained by Israeli forces in recent years.
One of the highest profile cases is that of Palestinian poet Dareen Tatour who was arrested from her home in October 2015, without the police having a search warrant or arrest warrant, and was charged with “incitement to violence” over a poem she posted on YouTube and two Facebook posts.
The poet has been on trial since September 2016. If found guilty, her charges would carry a prison term of up to eight years.
After her arrest, Tatour remained in detention for three months, being moved between three prisons, then was put under house arrest for six months in a Tel Aviv suburb, and then, due to mounting pressure from solidarity campaigns, is now under house arrest in her home town.
More recently, in January 2017, Israeli forces arrested Palestinian writer Walid Hodali after storming his home in Ramallah in the West Bank. The writer was taken to an unknown location and the reason for his arrest was unknown, though his arrest was part of a mass arrest operation in which dozens of Palestinians were taken into custody.
