Malaysia’s Film Censorship Board (LPF) changed the ending of blockbuster Tamil film ‘Kabali’ to insert a captioned moral message that crime doesn’t pay for Malay audiences rather than the original ending audiences in the rest of the world will see in which the fate of the lead character is left unknown, reported Malay Mail Online on 24 July 2016.

LPF chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid confirmed to the news outlet that the board contacted the film’s producer to add the caption “to send a message that the law cannot be taken into your own hands”.

Normally under our guidelines, there must be some kind of element of retribution in the movie, especially if the characters shown are involved in crime; then there must be some kind of comeuppance for that.

The chairman also stated that they made several “seconds-long” cuts to the film, totalling five minutes of footage that was lopped off the original release.

According to Abdul Hamid, the “minor censorship” was done in coordination with the film’s producer and included cutting a scene that used a derogatory term for ethnic Indians living in Malaysia, as well as “violent scenes, like the usage of a machete and all the gory parts” as the film was given a P13 rating, meaning children under 13 cannot be admitted unless accompanied by an adult.

The film, set in Malaysia, tells the story of a crime boss who was framed for a crime, comes out of prison and resumes control of his gang.
