Syria: Islamic State issues ban on songs by American singer
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) has distributed many leaflets in Syria to prohibit youth from listening to the songs of the American singer Madonna, reported Al Arabiya, MBC and over 40 other news providers and websites.
ISIL stated that Madonna’s songs are ‘haram’ (forbidden in Islam), since her music and performances, according to ISIL, “represent anti-Islamic values”, specifying that anyone caught listening to her music will be punished with 80 lashes.
Also, Madonna’s name in itself is one of the names of Virgin Mary, who is also considered ‘haram’ by ISIL, states the leaflet.
ISIL has also banned various visual arts, for instance the youth has been prohibited from wearing shirts with visual icons of European football (soccer) clubs such as Barcelona and Manchester United.
