UN Special Rapporteur joins artists and Freemuse in Geneva

The UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Ms Farida Shaheed, will join a meeting entitled ‘Suppression of artistic expression in MENA region’ on Friday 13 March 2015 at the UN headquarters in Geneva.

Organised by the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and Freemuse, the meeting will feature two artists: Sulafa Hijazi, a prominent Syrian visual artist now living in exile, and Hani Abbas, a Palestinian Syrian-based award-winning cartoonist.

The meeting is moderated by Freemuse Executive Director Ole Reitov, who will present the latest Freemuse statistics on violations on artistic freedom and discuss examples of censorship and repression of artists and artistic expressions in the MENA region – the Middle East and North Africa.

This is the first time ever a meeting focusing on artistic freedom in the MENA region takes place in the UN building.
