USA: Anti-censorship theatre even censored

A benefit event for the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) scheduled for 14 June 2015 at The Sheen Center in New York City, was abruptly called off after the theatre hosting the show deemed some of the content offensive. The event has since been rescheduled.

The show was cancelled by Sheen Management, which sought to make artistic changes to the show. Specifically, Sheen officials wanted to change the title of Neil LaBute’s play ‘Mohammed Gets A Boner’. They also sought changes to the remarks of some of the panelists who were scheduled to speak about censorship issues.

“It’s hard to imagine a more ironic outcome: a venue attempts to alter, edit and censor the works that are being performed at an anti-censorship event,” said NCAC Executive Director Joan Bertin.

ABC News reported soon after that the play festival will go on at a new location but without the Neil LaBute play that led to it being scrapped at its initial venue.

Playwrights for a Cause said that its festival, featuring three new short plays about censorship in the arts, will take place on 14 June 2015 at New York Theatre Workshop.
