USA: Paintings removed due to nudity

The ACLU Foundation of Southern California has filed a lawsuit against the county of San Bernardino for allegedly violating the free speech rights of a Rialto artist after pulling two of his paintings from public display “simply because some viewers had complained about the paintings,” according to a statement from the ACLU of Southern California.

“We often encounter the removal of artwork from public venues in response to a complaint,” wrote Svetlana Mintcheva, director of programs for the National Coalition Against Censorship, in a prepared statement. “But in the majority of cases, once we make them aware of their First Amendment obligations, public officials quickly correct their error and put the work back on display.”
